An Introduction to the Earthwatch "Climate Change in the Rainforest" Expedition

Background Information

Hi everyone at St Albans Secondary College. Over the school holidays I have been working alongside Earthwatch scientists in the tropical rainforest near Cairns. The Earthwatch Institute aims to promote a sustainable environment through research, education and conservation. My scientific research looks at how rainforest organisms are affected by climate change. Enjoy looking at what I've been up to and reviewing the fantastic Earthwatch expeditons.

In this lesson you will:

  • check out how Ms Mortimer has been going in the rainforest.
  • learn about the Earthwatch Institute.
  • investigate some of the fantastic Earthwatch expeditions.
  • read about the "Climate Change in the Rainforest" expedition.

You will need:

  • To go to the Student Drive and open your Folder and create a Science Folder.
  • To create a Powerpoint document in your Student Drive - Science Folder titled Lesson 1 My Earthwatch Expedition.

What to do:

You will complete Tasks 1 - 3. Task 2 requires you to produce a Powerpoint Presentation on your chosen Earthwatch Expedition.

Task 2 Earthwatch Expeditions

Click on EarthWatch Expeditions

You can search for an Expedition by “Region” or “Type of Research”.

Spend some time looking through the Expeditions and select one to investigate. Read over your Expedition TABS carefully.

The useful TABS are Overview; The Research and Google Map.

Create a Powerpoint presentation - "My Earthwatch Expedition" to inform other students about your expedition. Use the headings below and incllude a map to show the location of the fieldwork and at least one illustration.

  • Title of project
  • Leading Scientists
  • Location of the research
  • Aim of the research
  • What is the focus?
  • What will you be doing?
  • Why is the research necessary?
  • Why did you select this expedition?

Click on th Google Map to see where I am doing the rainforest research.

Read through the information under the TAB Headings: Overview and The Research

  • Compare your Earthwatch expedition with mine. How are they similar? How are the different? Do they have the same goals in mind?
